Information

The Mega Man Maker ongoing challenge event was a series of public level creation contests. These challenges usually had certain criteria for level design and were made to encourage creative usage of assets available within the game's editor. Several judges voted and gave written reviews on the entries, with the winning stage being the one that received the most votes. The winning creators from a challenge were usually offered a prize of some sort at the end of the challenge.

The challenge events were started by former beta tester dolphin who had already done contests in his Discord server, "Let Me Level With You". WreckingPrograms gave him permission to start the event on the Mega Man Maker Official Server.

On July 21, 2019, WreckingPrograms alongside other developers and global moderators discontinued the challenge events for many reasons and encouraged the community to take part in fan challenges instead. As a result, the Challenge Coordinator roles on the forums and the Discord server were removed. Additionally, while the Discord server already had a channel for fan challenges (#fan_challenges), a new category was added to the forums for fan challenges.

Intro to 1.3 You will create a level that is limited to the new content*. From weapons to enemies. (you are however allowed to use any of the backgrounds or tilesets for aesthetic purposes. But we definitely encourage usage of the new ones.)

Playing as Mega Man himself is fine, but since the new characters are the forefront of the update it’s probably best to use Proto Man or Bass this time around. If you feel that Mega Man himself is best suited for your level that is perfectly ok, don’t force some of the new stuff into your level just because you can.

Proto-Pocalypse This challenge will have you venturing through the wastes as Proto Man, taking heavier blows and giving out piddly damage with needle bullets; The enemies will be plentiful and out for your robotic blood, so give ‘em hell in return!
  • Proto Man must be the main playable character
  • Double Damage must be enabled
  • Crazy Razies (MM1) must make a prominent appearance in your stage
  • Enemy density must be high without outright spam

Wily Construction Co. Wily is being cheap once again, as instead of building his own Castle (or two, or three…) he’s decided to draft us all into our new MMM Challenge Event! While the doctor is busy eating shredded cheese out of the bag while questioning his life choices, the entrants will be tasked with providing a grand stage fit for the endgame!
  • No Kaizo or Troll stages are to be submitted.
  • The player must have eight actual weapons and two utilities in their arsenal.
    • These weapons must be available from the level’s start.
  • You may not use any form of Weapon or Character capsules.
  • The stage should not go too far beyond 50 screens total.

Nature's Wrath Winter is coming fast, and the world is striking out before all goes cold and quiet. In an effort to avoid being struck down by crazed animals, the entrants to this new MMM Challenge Event will be creating a stage themed around the nature assets given in MMM.
  • No Troll or Kaizo levels are to be submitted.
  • Only the bosses/enemies in the listed document may be used in the stage: (Accepted Enemies/Bosses Document is offline)

Retro Redux With the new year’s arrival, new resolutions and a review of what you’ve been through the past year usually come with it. Now with the old year replaced by the new, it’ll be the entrant’s duty to refresh and spice up the nostalgia-filled gems of Capcom’s beloved classics, in this brand new MMM Challenge Event.
  • No Troll or Kaizo levels are to be submitted.
  • Text-edits are NOT allowed for this challenge. (This includes multiple bosses)
  • The submission cannot be a 1:1 copy of the original stage’s layout.
  • The remake level must be originated from one of the numbered Mega Man series;
    • This means levels from the Game Boy series, &Bass, DOS series, etc. are NOT allowed.
  • Levels mustn’t excessively exceed the length of 50 screens.
  • The primary weapon must be the Buster of your chosen Player Character.


Before you lose hope from the seemingly endless restrictions above, here’s some clarification to what is allowed:


  • As long as it’s possible to tell the original level with ease, all aesthetic assets available in the editor are allowed!
  • Should an asset from the original stage not be available in MMM, use of a similar substitution is permitted.
  • Fortress stages are also open for remake.
    • As extension, multiple stages from the same fortresses are permitted.
  • Weapon Capsules and Character Capsules are allowed.
    • Proto Man may only be used for remixed stages of MM3 upwards.
    • Bass may only be used for remixed stages of MM7 upwards.
  • Intro/interlude stages are also allowed for remake.

Trivia

  • The challenges originated from the Let Me Level With You Discord server and went through nine challenges before being officially adopted by the Mega Man Maker Discord server. The nine challenges were:
    • Mega Man 2 only
    • Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 5 assets only (prior to the version 1.3.0 update)
    • Mega Man Maker assets only
    • 1.2.0 only
    • Exploration
    • Automatic traditional (a traditional level that can secretly be completed by holding left/right and nothing else)
    • Break out (start with almost nothing and gather weapons as the level progresses)
    • Shop
    • "Hard Mode" level (an easy level with ways to make it harder)
  • The Retro Redux event was the only event to include a prize which directly influenced the game's assets. The winner of the contest, Lenny, chose the weapon Rain Flush as the prize. The weapon was added in version 1.5.4.
