The Mega Man Maker ongoing challenge event is a series of public level creation contests. These challenges usually have certain criteria for level design and are made to encourage creative usage of assets available within the game's editor. Several judges vote on the entries where the levels picked are given are then given a written review by the judges who voted on the level, with the winning stage being the one that received the most votes. The top level creators from a challenge are usually offered a prize of some sort at the end of the challenge.

Since 2019, the contest event is no longer called a challenge to avoid confusion.

Intro to 1.3 You will create a level that is limited to the new content*. From weapons to enemies. (you are however allowed to use any of the backgrounds or tilesets for aesthetic purposes. But we definitely encourage usage of the new ones.)

Playing as Mega Man himself is fine, but since the new characters are the forefront of the update it’s probably best to use Proto Man or Bass this time around. If you feel that Mega Man himself is best suited for your level that is perfectly ok, don’t force some of the new stuff into your level just because you can.

Proto-Pocalypse This challenge will have you venturing through the wastes as Proto Man, taking heavier blows and giving out piddly damage with needle bullets; The enemies will be plentiful and out for your robotic blood, so give ‘em hell in return!
  • Proto Man must be the main playable character
  • Double Damage must be enabled
  • Crazy Razies (MM1) must make a prominent appearance in your stage
  • Enemy density must be high without outright spam

Cold King's Awakening Whether freezing your foes solid with the chilled glare of Ice Slasher or overwhelming everything in your path with the pure, sub-zero onslaught of Perfect Freeze, those of you who participate will be tasked to show us all why playing for the villainous side is just plain cool.
  • Bass must be the main playable character
  • Double Jump must be enabled

Wily Construction Co. Wily is being cheap once again, as instead of building his own Castle (or two, or three…) he’s decided to draft us all into our new MMM Challenge Event! While the doctor is busy eating shredded cheese out of the bag while questioning his life choices, the entrants will be tasked with providing a grand stage fit for the endgame!
  • No Kaizo or Troll stages are to be submitted.
  • The player must have eight actual weapons and two utilities in their arsenal.
    • These weapons must be available from the level’s start.
  • You may not use any form of Weapon or Character capsules.
  • The stage should not go too far beyond 50 screens total.

Nature's Wrath Winter is coming fast, and the world is striking out before all goes cold and quiet. In an effort to avoid being struck down by crazed animals, the entrants to this new MMM Challenge Event will be creating a stage themed around the nature assets given in MMM.
  • No Troll or Kaizo levels are to be submitted.

Retro Redux With the new year’s arrival, new resolutions and a review of what you’ve been through the past year usually come with it. Now with the old year replaced by the new, it’ll be the entrant’s duty to refresh and spice up the nostalgia-filled gems of Capcom’s beloved classics, in this brand new MMM Challenge Event.
  • No Troll or Kaizo levels are to be submitted.
  • Text-edits are NOT allowed for this challenge. (This includes multiple bosses)
  • The submission cannot be a 1:1 copy of the original stage’s layout.
  • The remake level must be originated from one of the numbered Mega Man series;
    • This means levels from the Game Boy series, &Bass, DOS series, etc. are NOT allowed.
  • Levels mustn’t excessively exceed the length of 50 screens.
  • The primary weapon must be the Buster of your chosen Player Character.


Before you lose hope from the seemingly endless restrictions above, here’s some clarification to what is allowed:


  • As long as it’s possible to tell the original level with ease, all aesthetic assets available in the editor are allowed!
  • Should an asset from the original stage not be available in MMM, use of a similar substitution is permitted.
  • Fortress stages are also open for remake.
    • As extension, multiple stages from the same fortresses are permitted.
  • Weapon Capsules and Character Capsules are allowed.
    • Proto Man may only be used for remixed stages of MM3 upwards.
    • Bass may only be used for remixed stages of MM7 upwards.
  • Intro/interlude stages are also allowed for remake.

Level Creation Contest Welcome to our second attempt at an overall Level Creation Contest! If you missed the first, here’s a quick intro: You’ll be asked to submit a stage to either a traditional or non-traditional category, each of which having its own set of rules alongside the general guideline.
  • Use of major glitches, exploits and text editing techniques are strictly forbidden from usage in a submitted stage.
    • This does not include commonly “encouraged” bugs such as one-way teleporters or the Minimap-driven autotiler fix.
  • Each user may only submit a single stage per category.
  • All stages must be an original work from the user submitting.
  • Submissions may not be a .mmlv file - it must be submitted online.
  • Stages must be completable and cannot include Developer Exits.
  • Kaizo and Troll stages may not be submitted to either category.
  • Inappropriate stage names or in-game imagery is strictly forbidden.
  • All stages have to be submitted to the correct category - they will not be moved once Judging begins.
  • Harassment of competitors and/or staff of both the main server and MMMLCC will result in instant disqualification.

Traditional

  • The chosen character’s stock buster must be the primary weapon.
  • The stage must be beatable only with the Primary in at least one route.
  • Stages must last up to 25 screens per route and cap off at approx. 50 total screens and up to four checkpoints, including alternate pathing.
  • Alternate paths do not require Primary-only completability, but should not lean too much into non-traditional standing.
  • Four-way and Vertical scrolling segments are highly discouraged.
  • Character and Weapon capsules are not permitted.
    • Rule exception: blank weapon capsules may be used as a full WE pickup.

Regarding Bosses and Midbosses

  • There may only be two Midboss Rooms per stage - any entity that locks a Boss Door until death counts as a midboss, each Room consists of a single screen.
  • Actual boss assets may only drop up to Large pickups if used as a midboss.
  • Stages must end in a single-Boss encounter.
  • Multiple endpoints to a stage are permitted, though still count towards maximum screen count.
  • No Boss or Midboss may be immune to Primary fire.

Non Traditional

  • General stages that do not follow the rules of the Traditional category.
  • Metroidvania-style stages
    • Stages must be under 100 screens total.
  • Non-Buster weapon focused stages.
  • Rush Jet & Treble Boost levels.
  • Puzzle stages.
    • Puzzles must not include trollish design or liberal use of bugs
  • Boss Rush-esque stages.
    • Use of multiple bosses must be done with 1.5’s in-game functionality.

Trivia

  • As of September 23rd 2018, Dolphin is both no longer a challenge coordinator of, and no longer affiliated with, the Mega Man Maker Ongoing Challenge Event. Aze was subsequently promoted to Challenge Coordinator.
  • The Retro Redux event was the first to include a prize which directly influenced MMM's assets (winner chose an NES-series weapon to be added). The weapon chosen was the Rain Flush.
  • The challenges originated from Let Me Level with you discord server, and went through 9 challenges before being officially adopted by the MMM discord server. The 9 challenges were:
 -Mega Man 2
-Exploration
-1.2 only
-Automatic Traditional (make a traditional level that can secretly be completed by held down left/right and doing nothing else)
-Break Out (start out with almost nothing, gathering arsenals as the level goes along)
-MMM assets only
-Shop
-MM4 and MM5 assets only (this was before the 1.3 update)
-"Hard Mode" Level (an easy level with ways to make it harder)
