|The key and key door in-game|
Keys are Level Objects introduced in Mega Man Maker Version 1.2.0, inspired from the keys in Super Mario Maker and Make a Good Mega Man Level 2. These digital door-openers can open any Key Door from any side. Upon opening a door, a key is consumed. Until 1.6.3, the player could store no more than seven keys at once, but the limit was raised to 99 in 1.7.0. Collecting more keys after already having seven simply makes the key disappear. Keys cannot be placed in Enemies, and are unaffected by gravity, floating wherever they are placed. Checkpoints will save keys if they are not used up already. In 1.7.0, the Keys come in four different colors aside from the blue ones: green, pink, and orange. The Key Doors were similarly modified and can only be open to the respective color.
Originally, the Key, along with the Key Door, used the same design as the ones from Make a Good Mega Man Level 2, whose Key graphic was in turn ripped from Super Mario Maker. However, it was changed due to the design not fitting the Mega Man universe.
Since 1.5.0, Bosses set to give a key instead on being a goal after defeat will give the Player a key. Keys obtained this way go directly to the player instead of being placed on the place the boss was defeated. With the color options introduced in 1.7.0, the color of the key the boss drops can be modified in the boss settings.
Since 1.7.0, Keys were given different colors variants. Collecting them would allow players to open colored doors. The amount of keys was also increased to 99.
- SnoruntPyro gave WreckingPrograms permission to implement the Key and the Key Door from Make a Good Mega Man Level 2.
- The Key, along with the Key Door, were the final items announced for 1.2 before the release date was revealed.
- At the end of the GIF revealing colored Keys and Key Doors, Mega Man falls into a narrow pit and collects 17 blue Keys, 12 green Keys, 19 pink Keys, and 87 orange Keys. This number corresponds to the release date of Mega Man in Japan, 17/12/1987, or December 17, 1987.
- Despite the change in 1.7.0 that allows players to carry up to 99 keys, the description for the key remains unchanged, becoming outdated as the information of carrying up to 7 is no longer true in that update.
