The weapon consists of using an energy barrier to absorb enemy projectile attacks, and launch them back as energy projectiles. The barrier will remain in front of the player as long as they hold in the shoot button and have weapon ammo for the weapon still remaining.
When an enemy projectile is absorbed, and launched back as an energy projectile, it will cost 1 weapon energy. As only one energy projectile created in this manner can be on-screen at a time, any additionally absorbed enemy projectiles will be despawned at the cost of 0 weapon energy instead, as long as the created energy projectile remains on-screen.
Unlike Shine or Proto Shield that launch the projectiles in the opposite direction upon reflection, projectiles absorbed by Mirror Buster will cause energy projectiles to fire horizontally in the facing direction of the player and their barrier, regardless of the projectile's initial direction of travel before being absorbed.
Bosses like Crash Man, Metal Man, Skull Man, and Toad Man, that would normally react to the player pressing the "shoot button", will not react to the player pressing the "shoot button" to activate Mirror Buster's barrier. They will however instead react to projectiles being reflected by Mirror Buster barrier. According to the developer Luigi, this was an intentional design choice.
- Mirror Buster is the first and only weapon originating from Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge to appear in Mega Man Maker. This is not surprising, as it is also the only original weapon from the game.
- Although the Mirror Buster initially debuted in Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, the version of the weapon used within Mega Man Maker is based on its design and functionality from the DLC of Mega Man 10.
- The Mirror Buster also makes an appearance in Mega Man V for Gameboy, though it is exclusively used by Enker in a boss fight, and is never obtained or used by the player at any point in the game.
- The Mirror Buster is the first ever instance of of Mega Man acquiring a 9th special weapon not considered a utility.
