How to Make a Mod

From Mega Man Maker
Jump to: navigation, search

Mods, or Game Modifications are a new addition to the Mega Man Maker community as of April 2018. They are relatively young, they are mainly composed of texture hacks and Nintendo Sound File (NSF) replacements, and the process of making one is tedious to newcomers. That is where this guide comes in. For those that are direction-oriented, this guide should help you all out. For those that are of the visual-learning variety, it is advisable to watch Bucket's video on how to extract and reinsert Mega Man Maker data.

QuickBMS Method (Outdated)

  • Requirements

There are three main things you will need in order to make a texture mod. To start out, you'll need to download Mega Man Maker. It can be any version, but newer versions are generally preferred. You'll also need QuickBMS, a file extractor and reinserting program, and a yoyogames.bms script. Finally, you'll need an image editing program that has a transparency option, so no Microsoft Paint or anything like that. GaleGraphics, Gimp, and Photoshop excel in this regard.

  • Extracting The Files

First, you'll need to extract the data. It is very helpful to create a folder to put the data in and easily keep track of.

  • Go into QuickBMS and open the "QuickBMS" application. Let the application run until it asks you for a script. Go into the QuickBMS folder or Script folder and find "yoyogames.bms." Click on it and click on "Open".
  • The application will then tell you to find the input archives/files. Open the Mega Man Maker folder and find "data.win". Click on it and click on "Open".
  • Finally, the application will then tell you to find the output folder. Open your designated folder and click on "Save".

The application will then extract the files of the games and put them into your designated folder. It is also advisable to keep a backup of the data and game if anything goes wrong.

  • Reinsering The Files

After you're done editing on the textures, you'll need to reinsert the data.

  • Go into QuickBMS and open the "Reimport" application. Let the application run until it asks you for a script. Go into the QuickBMS folder or Script folder and find "yoyogames.bms." Click on it and click on "Open".
  • The application will then tell you to find the input archives/files. Open the Mega Man Maker folder and find "data.win" Click on it and click on "Open".
  • Finally, the application will then tell you to find the output folder. Open your designated folder and click on "Save". Don't click on anything else.

If all goes well, the application will reinsert the data back into data.win and you should be able to open Mega Man Maker without a problem. The process is faster if you just reimport the files you edited.

Hopefully this will help anyone who has trouble with the process or is a first-timer at this.

Undertale Mod Tool Method

Welcome to the future!

This tool should ease the extraction and reinsertion process. The naming of these files should provide much more clearer organization as well.
