The Definitive Guide To Configuring Your Router for Mega Man Maker Direct IP Multiplayer Editing*

*or at least until it updates

I wanted to write this guide because I know these questions will be asked often. So if you don't know how to use create a room using the direct IP option, this guide will be a good place to start. If you have any questions, I ask that you read this guide first. It has a lot of pictures, resources, and big fish memes! Forwarding your port is pretty simple, and this guide should serve as a good starting point for most people. If you are unsure or do not feel comfortable doing this, please use the Server Lobby feature.

What you need

Access to a router

First and foremost, if you do not have access to your router you can not do this! Now, if your router is under strict supervision from your parents, ask them for permission and help first. Mega Man Maker just needs one port open, and it can be whatever port number you want it to be. The default port used by the game is 41000. Mega Man Maker is safe, and it is not sharing your data with anybody. However, if you don’t have access, you can’t use this feature.

Some level of tech skills and Windows/Linux PC

You will need to know how to open the command prompt and be able to run a few commands. This guide will show you how to do this as well. Direct IP currently works well on Windows and Linux systems. Not on macOS systems. As of right now, the main advantage Direct IP has is that it works on Linux. Server Lobbies do not work properly on Linux computers at the moment.

Let’s get to it!

Step 1: Open the command prompt and get your gateway

Go to the search bar and type in the “cmd” into the search bar. Once it opens, type the “ipconfig” command. You should see a lot of letters and numbers, we are looking for the Default Gateway and the IPV4 Address. Write them both down.

Step 2: Let’s go to your gateway

If you don’t have the authority to log into your router, please ask your parents or guardian to assist you with this step.

Put your default gateway that you copied from step one, into your web browsers URL bar. Press enter, and you should be prompted for a username and password. You may or may not be prompted. It depends on your router.

Step 3: The Scary Port Forwarding Bit

It really isn’t that scary. Navigate to find a section that says something like NAT, Port Forward, or even Apps and Games. Each router has it labeled differently. For your specific routers instructions, find it in this list and follow this guide: https://portforward.com/router.htm

Step 4. Forward port 41000

Lastly. here’s the data you need to get direct IP working

Application Name: MMM-PortFWD (This can be whatever you want)
Protocol: TCP or Both
Source Net: Leave Blank if prompted.
Port From (Source Port): 41000
IP Address: Your IPV4 Address from Step 1. (This may change from time to time)
Port To (Destination Port): 41000
Enable: Check the box to turn it on or off.
Apply and save your settings, and now you can use the new feature!

Step 5. Obtain your Public IP Address

So the last step is to actually get you public IPv4 address. This is the address you will give to your friends so they can join your online session. There are many tools that can help grab your public IP address. My personal preference is Google.com. You can also use https://megamanmaker.com/?page=ip. Do not share this with strangers or people you have just met. Only share this if you are comfortable or if you received parental permission first.

Step 6. Start editing!

Start a Direct IP session in Mega Man Maker, and now your friends can join your game by entering the public IP address you gave to them.

Other Resources

https://portforward.com/ is a good resource to look for specific router guides.

https://api.megamanmaker.com/ip can also get your your public IP address.
