The Mega Man Maker challenge event (also known as MMMCE, Mega Man Maker Level Contest, or MMMLC) is a series of public level creation contests held in Mega Man Maker. These challenges usually have certain criteria for level design and are made to encourage creative usage of assets available within the game's editor. Several judges vote and give written reviews on the entries, with the winning stage being the one that received the most votes. The winning creators from a challenge are usually offered a prize at the end of the challenge; in recent contests, the reward for the winning level has often been its inclusion as an example level in the next major update.

History

The first official contest was a Level Creation Contest in 2017 that was host by ByucknahTheRed. It had two categories of Traditional and Non-traditional levels.

The challenge events were started by then beta tester dolphin who had already done contests in his Discord server, "Let Me Level With You". WreckingPrograms gave him permission to start the event on the Mega Man Maker Official Server. It was distinct from the format of Byucknah's level creation contest where there were themes and restrictions as opposed to Traditional and Non-traditional categories. The then fellow beta tester Aze was a co-host for the events. However, due to sexual harassment and abuse of power allegations, dolphin was fired and Aze was the sole coordinator until V1ral joined.

On July 21, 2019, WreckingPrograms alongside other developers and global moderators discontinued the challenge events for many reasons and encouraged the community to take part in fan challenges instead. As a result, the Challenge Coordinator roles on the forums and the Discord server were removed. Additionally, while the Discord server already had a channel for fan challenges (#fan_challenges), a new category was added to the forums for fan challenges.

The challenge event was brought back on June 12, 2021 with NotQuiteHere being reinstated as a challenge coordinator and previous challenge members V1ral and Very Clean Guy being appointed assistant challenge coordinators. NotQuiteHere closed his unofficial Challenge Event server in favor of leading the official events. Turbo Time Trials was different from other challenges in that the prize is getting the winning level included in the Example Levels and the contest is solely hosted in the Discord server. NotQuiteHere resigned in August of 2022 and Very Clean Guy replaced him as the main coordinator. However, Very Clean Guy resigned as of 2023.

The challenge event was once again revived on December 20, 2024 with Sasha as the new challenge coordinator. The New Year's Tradition contest was the first official challenge contest after over three years with new challenges taking place more frequently.

Level Creation Contests

The Level Creation Contests were a pair of contests of levels in Mega Man Maker. The idea was related to the challenge event. There were two major events hosted by the Mega Man Maker team in 2017 and in 2019.

There was a "Traditional" category for levels similar to those in the original Mega Man games, as well as a "Non-Traditional" category for more unique levels. The first Level Creation Contest also had a "Challenge" category for particularly difficult levels or for levels based around a weapon, but for the second one, this category was merged with the "Non-traditional" category. After evaluating the levels, the judges wrote reviews of all the levels.

Trivia

• The challenges originated from the Let Me Level With You Discord server and went through nine challenges before being officially adopted by the Mega Man Maker Discord server. The nine challenges were:
  1. Mega Man 2 only
  2. Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 5 assets only (prior to the version 1.3.0 update)
  3. Mega Man Maker assets only
  4. 1.2.0 only
  5. Exploration
  6. Automatic traditional (a traditional level that can secretly be completed by holding left/right and nothing else)
  7. Break out (start with almost nothing and gather weapons as the level progresses)
  8. Shop
  9. "Hard Mode" level (an easy level with ways to make it harder)
• The Retro Redux event was the only event to include a prize which directly influenced the game's assets. The winner of the contest, Lenny, chose the weapon Rain Flush as the prize. The weapon was added in version 1.5.4.
