Reason: Missing backgrounds from 1.8.0 onwards including ones from Mega Man & Bass and the Game Boy games

Backgrounds are a set of 256x224 graphics that can be placed behind tiles and other game objects in Mega Man Maker. Each screen can only have up to two backgrounds. The colors of transparent portions of some backgrounds can be changed via the background color setting and applies to the background color for the entire level: this option can be found in the level settings menu prior to version 1.1.0 or in the backgrounds section as "BG Color" since version 1.1.0.

Unlike the first 6 Mega Man games backgrounds are not made out of smaller tiles which makes them much easier to place.

Layering

Since version 1.9.0, backgrounds can be placed on one of two possible layers: a Back Layer and a Front Layer. Backgrounds featuring transparency are marked with a small T in the background selector and are now referred to as "T Backgrounds".

T Backgrounds can be placed on both the Back and the Front Layers, while non-T Backgrounds, i.e. fullscreen backgrounds that do not feature any transparency whatsoever, can only be placed on the Back Layer.

When a background is chosen, it will automatically be placed on the Back Layer. To place a T Background on the Back Layer instead, the icon for the Front Layer, shown on the right side of the screen, must be right-clicked, preventing backgrounds from being placed on it.

Error handler

Reason: More information
Icon Name Description Version
Undefined No description available. 1.0.0

The "Undefined" icon is used when an asset fails to load for whatever reason, most commonly when an asset has not been listed in the gml_Script_initCategoryNAME script where "NAME" is the name of the category. Although the asset's icon appears as normal in the Level Builder, when placed in the Level Builder the asset itself appears as a 1x1 tile with a white border and a translucent background. When a background is placed in the Level Builder, this tile appears in the top left corner of a screen.

The error handler was accidentally made manually accessible by selecting Wily 2 BG 2 from Mega Man 3 in 1.6.1, but was fixed and made unavailable again in 1.6.1.1.

Trivia

  • There are unused versions of Wily 2 BG, Junk BG, and Junk BG 2 and a completely unused Time BG 2 background. They can be used by text editing a .MMLV level file, making them unused content that still works.
  • Prior to version 1.8.0, the only Robot Master boss without a background in Mega Man Maker was Air Man from Mega Man 2, presumably because the clouds originally found in his stage are not backgrounds and instead work as foreground elements that hinder the player's sight. However, with version 1.8.0 adding content from the Game Boy games, specifically Air BG from Mega Man II, this is no longer the case.
  • Although Search Man's stage was originally located in Congo, Africa, the Level Builder description for Search BG and Search BG 2 erroneously refer to the Amazon jungle, which is located in South America.
  • Prior to version 1.7.0, Strike BG 6's description was "How many pluses you can find? Submit your answer and win a great prize!". The description was updated in the version to congratulate the user MM2WilySt2 who counted 6974 pluses.
