The Romper is an enemy from Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass, appearing in Clown Man's stage in Mega Man 8 and Magic Man's stage in Mega Man & Bass. It was introduced to Mega Man Maker as of version 1.8.0.

Behavior

The Romper is very small (around three-eighths of a tile, but is still 1x1 in the Level Builder) and walks forward at a slow pace. Once it makes contact with the player, it will latch onto them and drain either their health or weapon energy depending on its specific settings. A Romper will steal the player's health or weapon energy up to six times or as little as three times if the player quickly presses their button inputs.

A Romper can be set as one of four spawn options:

  1. Dropping in from its position in the builder when spawned in
  2. Dropping in from edge of the screen above when the player is less than one tile next horizontally from its position
  3. Jumping two tiles horizontally when spawned in
  4. Clinging onto solid objects placed above such as ladders, a ceiling or Weapon Block in the Level Builder, dropping in when the player is less than one tile horizontally from its position. If there are no solid objects above, the Romper will drop down as normal and start walking in its set direction.

Romper comes in five colors: red, green, yellow, blue, and purple. The color corresponds to what a Romper will drain each time:

  • A Red Romper will take one unit of health
  • A Green Romper will take one unit of weapon energy of the currently equipped non-primary weapon
  • A Yellow Romper will take two units of health
  • A Blue Romper will take two units of weapon energy of the currently equipped non-primary weapon
  • A Purple Romper will grab the player, only hindering their movement and taking no health or weapon energy

If the player is attacked by a green or blue Romper that steals their weapon energy while a primary weapon is equipped, the Romper will steal weapon energy from a randomly selected secondary weapon instead each time.[1]

The purple Romper variant was added in version 1.8.4.

Trivia

  • Green Rompers, known as Rompers G, originally stole the player's screws in Mega Man & Bass. However, there are no screws in Mega Man Maker, thus they instead take weapon energy.
  • In Mega Man 8, when stealing the player's health, it is not visible as flying away from player. It is a reference to Mega Man & Bass where stolen screws are visible as flying away.
  • The blue and yellow Romper variants were originally thought of as options for the red and green variants, but were added as their own assets for gameplay and color blindness purposes.[2]
