The Magnetic Coil level object | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The Magnetic Coil (also called Spring Man Coil in the game's files) is a custom level object originating from Mega Man Maker that has been featured in the game since version 1.8.0.
Behavior
The coil is affected by gravity and will pull the player towards it when it is hit with electricity; this is similar to a magnetized Spring Man when in contact with electricity, but is half as weak as Spring Man's pull. According to JumpDashEvade, "this was done to prevent cases where someone could accidentally softlock themselves. Although it's still possible, it's less likely to be accidental and more likely to be purposeful."[1]
Fixed bugs
- Prior to version 1.8.2, Magnetic Coil would not reset itself or its falling speed properly after leaving a section.
- Prior to version 1.8.3, the sound effect for an electrified Magnetic Coil could be heard from outside of a section and would not stop when leaving the section.
- Since version 1.8.4, Bari Heads are now pushed down when Magnetic Coil stands on it similar to Push Blocks.
- Prior to version 1.9.4, placing Fuse Man on top of a Magnetic Coil would crash the game.
Trivia
- The reveal of the Magnetic Coil ended its description with "What were you expecting something more?", likely to lampshade a similar gimmick from Mega Man 7 that functions much differently.
- While the clear inspiration for this custom object originates from Spring Man and his electromagnetic reaction to electricity, the Magnetic Coil also bears resemblance to the Electrical Coil Objects in Volt Man's stage in Mega Man on DOS both in appearance and function. It may also be partially inspired by Magnet Man's magnet pull attack.
