DWN-016 Wood Man is one of the 8 custom-made Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 introduced in 1.2.0 update. His signature weapon is the Leaf Shield, which he uses in tandem with summoned leaves from the ceiling. He's weak to many weapons in his game of origin, and gives a decently strong copy of Leaf Shield when taken down.

Built by Dr. Wily to fight Mega Man, he challenged him in Mega Man 2 but was outmatched by Mega Man. His combat data is later reused and used by Doc Robot during events of Mega Man 3. He later comes back with four other MM2 robots in Mega Man II.

Behavior

Wood Man's AI follows a simple pattern that he never strays from. Immediately on starting the fight, he throws up a Leaf Shield to reflect most projectiles. Following that, four leaves rain down onto the Player Character to do damage, and the Leaf Shield is tossed at the player mid-ways through the leaf rain. Wood Man then leaps towards the player and start the pattern over again. Unlike most bosses, defeating him does not despawn his projectiles: the falling leaves still can harm the player character until they fall from the screen.

Even if the Leaf Shield and the four upwards leaves are negated, the four leaves will still appear. The Leaf Shield is mostly indestructible when it is still around Wood Man, but the Black Hole Bomb can suck away it anytime, while it can be reflected by Proto Shield, Shine or Jewel Satellite when it is tossed. However, it still bounces most projectiles off when it is tossed. Despite having a powerful shield, Wood Man can still be damaged by armor-piercing attacks, like Ring Boomerang, Gravity Hold or Laser Trident.

His Leaf Shield cannot protect Wood Man of the Flame Sword, similarly to his appearance in the Sega Saturn version of Mega Man 8. However, the Flame Sword cannot burn any of Wood Man's leaves.

Trivia

  • In Mega Man 2, Wood Man has the most weaknesses counting both full and semi-damage boost - Atomic Fire, Metal Blade, and Air Shooter all did extra damage
  • In the Sega Saturn version of Mega Man 8, he and Cut Man appear as two secret bosses.
