The Pointan is a floating mouse cursor and digital enemy originating from Mega Man 10. In its original appearance, it was designated to only Sheep Man's and the Wily Castle stages. The Pointan is a rather emblematic enemy in Mega Man Maker as a whole, as a smaller variant serves as the in-game cursor.

Pointan debuted in version 1.6.0 of Mega Man Maker.

Level Builder

The Pointan is designated to the 6th layer of the editor (Close front), and as such, it can be placed over tiles, as well as some level objects. In addition, the Pointan has two customizable attributes - the first being its color, which can be manually selected between a set of eleven different tones - Blue, Red, Green, Purple, Pink, Yellow, a brownish Orange, Navy Blue, Black, Grey, or White. The chosen color will not affect the Pointan's behavior, but its projectiles will share the same hue. The other option allows for the player to select the Pointan's initial projectile formation between a square, a vertical bar, or a horizontal bar, although the pattern will still change each individual time the Pointan attacks.

Behavior

Initially after spawning, the Pointan will briefly float in place, before clicking and dragging a set of four artificial panels out of thin air, either in the shape of a square, or a straight line. These panels are then fired off as projectiles, one after the other in routine intervals. If the panels are generated in the shape of a (2x2) square, the first panel will be fired vertically in the vertical direction of the player, and predictably, the second panel will be fired horizontally in the player's horizontal direction. The third and fourth panels follow the direction of the first and second panels, respectively. If the panels are generated in the formation of a (1x4) column, then each of the panels will be fired horizontally towards the player. If the panels are generated in the formation of a (4x1) bar, then each of the panels will be fired vertically towards the player. These panels are capable of passing through terrain and solid objects, but they can be destroyed through use of suitable weaponry, or upon contact with the player, although this will also damage them.

After the Pointan has fired a barrage of panels, it will switch to the next formation of panels in the "pattern": Square - Column - Bar. If the Pointan's initial pattern is set to Square, it will perform a Column on its second attack, and a Bar on its third, before the pattern loops. If the Pointan's initial pattern is set to Column, it will perform a Bar on its second attack, and a Square on its third, prompting the pattern to loop - so on and so forth, as the same applies to when the initial formation is set to Bar.

Trivia

  • As of version 1.9.4.3 of Mega Man Maker, the Pointan currently holds the record of most color variants out of any enemy with a total of eleven different hues. The enemy with the second most color variations, and previous holder of the record prior to version 1.6.0, is Pukapelly, sitting at a comfortable number of eight customizable colors.
  • The smaller variant of the Pointan used as Mega Man Maker's mouse cursor is commonly referred to as Pointkun.
    • Pointkun's color can be adjusted between the same eleven hues as the Pointan via Mega Man Maker's options menu, for customization and accessibility purposes.
