Crunchran is an enemy trap robot first appearing alongside Astro Man in his stage in Mega Man 8 and reappearing again with Astro Man's return in Mega Man & Bass. Crunchran was added to Mega Man Maker in version 1.5.0.
Behavior
Crunchran shares many similarities with the Wanaan Level Object from Mega Man 3. Crunchran hides in what appears to be small puddles of slime: once a player is five tiles horizontally and one tile vertically or closer to a Crunchran, its single eye will rise up from the puddle and scan about for the player's movement. After a short while, its puddle will quickly move to the player's position when they were detected. The puddle form does no damage; however, once at the player's vertical position, the Crunchran will appear out of the puddle snapping its jaws in an attempt to damage the player. A Crunchran will stop moving if it falls off a height of more than one tile; otherwise, it will keeping moving in its initial direction.
If a Crunchran has begun its movement and the player is more than one tile vertically or is in the opposite direction of where they were located when the Crunchran began scanning, the Crunchran will stop its motion after moving four tiles horizontally in the direction that the player was located when the Crunchran began scanning. As long as the player is within range and the Crunchran has not attacked yet, it will not return to its puddle and will continue scanning.
Whilst difficult to hit with many weapons due to its low profile, Crunchran is highly vulnerable to surface crawling weapons (Bubble Lead, Napalm Bomb), screen clearing weapons (Rain Flush, Centaur Flash) and weapons that can strike at the feet of the player such as Silver Tomahawk and Flame Blast.
Trivia
- Although Crunchran's Level Builder description states that the enemy is made of acid, it does not affect the acidity levels of level objects such as Burst Water and Chemical Solution.
