This article is missing important information to be considered complete. You can expand on it by adding content to this page. Reason: A more complete list of guidelines. |
A list of the order templates should be put in on pages. These should be put on the bottom of pages where the templates are relevant.
Note: Before all standard templates, the template clr should be used. This will ensure there is no overlapping with other page elements and makes the page look nicer.

The Ultimate Guide To Editing the Mega Man Maker Wiki
By Midas Magnezone and DarkiusMC
General
This guide is intended for people who wish to contribute to the wiki but don’t know where to start. Well, to start with, you need an account on the Mega Man Maker wiki!
Click on "Create account" (or if you already have an account, the "Log in" button) in the top right corner. All you need is a username and a password. You need to enter the secret password (don’t worry, it’s the same every time) to create an account and enter it every time you wish to make a contribution. This is to ensure that spambots and bots don’t flood the wiki as has happened in the past.
Please read the following rules before making edits:
Here are a few quick tips:
- Once you make a contribution, this needs to be approved by a moderator before it shows up publicly. Edits are approved regularly, but if it’s been a few days and your edit has still not been approved, please ping a wiki mod in the Discord server (preferably the #mmm_wiki channel).
- Be professional when editing the wiki. Imagine you’re writing an encyclopedia encompassing all of Mega Man Maker: that is the main goal of the wiki.
- Check for spelling mistakes in your writing and include appropriate punctuation marks. Also avoid contractions where possible (e.g. "it’s" should be written as "it is")
- Write in clear, concise, proper English. Imagine a fifth grader reading your work: it should be easy to understand and make sense to them.
You may have conflicting views on how to make the wiki better. While this guide tries to lay down general rules for editing the wiki, some things may be too nuanced to mention explicitly. Please respect other people’s edits to your work.
If you disagree on an edit, avoid edit wars: explain to the person what you disagree on and why in a civil manner. Don’t be a troll and make the lives harder for the mods and other contributors. You’re not helping.

Where to start?
Check out special pages for list of stuff to work on. This includes:
Images
Lots of pages need images to be uploaded. Check the list of pages mentioned in Category:Image Needed.
To capture a screenshot in-game, use the F9 button. This will capture a screenshot at the window resolution your game is currently in (1x, 2x, 3x, 4x). To record a GIF, use the F7 button to start and stop recording a GIF. This is however not a preferred method to record GIFs for the wiki due to the compression involved; instead, use the tool ScreenToGif to create small GIFs. Anything longer than 10 seconds is likely too big for the wiki and would probably be better as a video.
For in-game images, simple high quality screenshots will suffice. Unless they are sprites found in the game that would be better at their original resolution (such as icons), images should be uploaded at 2x or 3x resolution. For enemies and level objects with variants, images with all the variants placed in a single image are recommended instead of one image for each variant. . This is to ensure that images don’t lose quality when viewed on the wiki due to upscaling. To remove transparent backgrounds, use the magic tool feature in an editing program like paint.net and upload the image as a PNG.
To upload an image, click on “Upload file” in the sidebar. (A "Batch upload" option is also available should you need to upload multiple images at once.)
When naming files, use an appropriate name and descriptors for the image that would be easy to type and remember (e.g. an image of the enemy Bell Ringer being defeated by the player could be written with the name BellRingerDefeated.png or Bell_Ringer_Defeated.png). Try to spell out numbers or special characters so that the image is easier to type and search for.
Place images on an article the same way you would with hyperlinks: double square brackets with “File:” at the start, followed by the name of the image (e.g. File:EnemyAssetExample.png
)
- Categorize pages: A lot of pages still need categories to be added to them. To do so, add to the end of a page to add a page to a category. A list of categories can be found here: https://wiki.megamanmaker.com/index.php/Special:Categories
- Update content: stub pages that need more information. Any information added about the page is appreciated.
- Try and link to a page on the wiki wherever possible. This is known as a hyperlink. Use two square brackets like this: example to link to that page on the wiki. To link to a page on another website, use single brackets with the link then a space then the text that will be have that link e.g. [www.google.com example] will show up as “example” linking to www.google.com when clicked on
- Missing pages: Pages that still need to be made. This also includes images that need to be uploaded. These show up as a red link when reading a page: clicking on a red link leads the creation of said page. Be sure the missing page is not a misspelling of an existing page or a duplicate of a page that already exists. Some pages may be better off as redirects written simply as
#REDIRECT page name
orK|#REDIRECT page name#section
on the page to be created.
- Formatting/grammar fixes: these include things like:
- bolding the first instance of the name of the page
- italicizing any names of games
- incorrect grammar (“it’s” instead of “its”, things that don’t make sense or can be rectified, missing punctuation marks, etc.)
- if there are multiple instances in a single page of something that has a wiki page, only create a hyperlink for the first instance of that thing from the top of that page.
- be consistent throughout. There are things like dates or alternate spellings where it is generally fine to use one of the many accepted formats as long as you are consistent throughout the page
- American spelling is preferred, but British spelling is fine as long as you are consistent with one version throughout a page (e.g. color vs colour)
for versions of dates, please use one of the three listed below: mdy (16:12, January 15, 2001) dmy (16:12, 15 January 2001) ymd (16:12, 2001 January 15)
additionally, numerical dates i.e. yyyy-mm-dd (2001-01-15) may be used in special cases (also called the "all-numeric" format; used only where space is limited, such as in references and some tables and infoboxes, but not in article text proper).
- adding templates to the bottom of the page (version, type of asset, from which game the asset is from; see https://wiki.megamanmaker.com/index.php/User:DarkiusMC/Templates for a full list of what should be added to a page)
- look out for missing information that can be added to a template, often the asset template (the infobox on the right of the page) https://wiki.megamanmaker.com/index.php/Template:Asset (e.g. enemies missing the amount of hp they have.)
Templates: these are a way of informing the reader of certain things like a page that needs an image, requires more information, is from an upcoming content, or which game/asset/version a page relates to. These can be added by using TemplateName. Some templates are simple: just pop the template name in squiggly brackets and a message will show up (e.g. ImageNeeded, Upcoming Content). Others, like the Asset or User templates, require you to add additional parameters to the template.
Here is a list of templates you can add to a page (check the categories of templates at the top if you don’t know what a template is for) https://wiki.megamanmaker.com/index.php/Category:Templates
Tables are a great way to organize information on the wiki. The usual format is as follows:
Icon | Weapon | Contribution(s) | Added in Version | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Buster | Code | 1.6.0 | ||
Proto Buster |
Formatting tips
== Title == for adding a main subtitle
=== Title === for adding a smaller subtitle
‘’Test’’ for italics. Usually used for names of games
‘’’Test’’’ for bolding. Usually used for emphasis or bolding the first instance of the name of the page.
‘’’’’Test’’’’’ for both bolding and italics. Usually used for bolding a game’s name in the first instance of the name of the page.
clr ensures that any text above it is completely finished before starting the text after the clr on its own section. Usually used for text after a template or a table.
< nowiki > Text < /nowiki > (without spaces) to write characters that are ignored by wiki formatting e.g. “In ‘’Mega Man Maker’’< nowiki >’< /nowiki >s first release…” the use of nowiki ensures that “’s” does not interfere with other apostrophes elsewhere in a text.
<syntaxhighlight lang="CSS" inline> Test code </syntaxhighlight> for publishing any code that requires code formatting. Not commonly used but may pop up when talking about game files.
Template used anytime you want to link to a template. For more in-depth templates like the Asset template, write in a similar way to tables:
Weapon capsule | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pink theme sucks | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
and start and end the template. Each now parameter is written as |parameter= where any text or image can be part after the equal to sign for the parameter.
https://wiki.megamanmaker.com/index.php/Template:Asset
links to a user page. :Category:CategoryName links to a category. pastes the text on that category page. Not really required, but handy to know just incase.
#REDIRECT PageName redirects to a specific page. Often useful to link to specific sections on a page, common misspellings or alternate spellings of assets.
Although the first Mega Man game is commonly known as Mega Man 1, it should be referred to as Mega Man in italics wherever possible unless mentioned otherwise in Mega Man Maker specifically.
See wiki policy pages (images, formatting, upcoming content, etc.)
